Árbol melífero naturalizado cuyo fruto se utiliza en la preparación de una bebida agria y refrescante, así como teces medicinales y la creación de una tinta temporera para la piel de color azul-negro. Su madera se utiliza para cabos de herramientas, muebles, cajas y carretas. Es un árbol grande que puede crecer hasta 60 pies, por lo que requiere bastante espacio a su alrededor al momento de sembrarlo. Tolera suelo fértil, arcilloso y con buen drenaje.
